Pol Rommens is the Director of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at the University Medical Centre of the Johannes Gutenberg-University of Mainz, Germany.
He studied medicine at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium, graduating in 1979. After specialising in surgery in 1985, Pol joined the Department of Traumatology and Emergency Surgery at the University Hospitals Gasthuisberg in Leuven, and completed his doctoral thesis entitled The tibial shaft fracture with severe soft tissue damage in 1990.
Pol became the founding president of the Belgian Trauma Society (1993-1997), and has served as president of both the Küntscher Society (1997-2003) and the European Society of Trauma and Emergency Surgery (ESTES) (2009-2010).
He has authored and co-authored more than 500 publications, of which 303 are PubMed listed, as well as 8 monographs. Pol is also the current editor of the European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery and is serving as the AOTrauma Europe Research Chair until 2020.
