The original idea behind the OTS was to create a society for orthopaedic surgeons with a specific interest in orthopaedic trauma. This was around 2012 when orthopaedic trauma was evolving within the UK: major trauma networks; best practice hip fracture tariffs; expanding range of UK & international orthopaedic trauma fellowships with a range of multi-centre pragmatic, NIHR funded clinical trials looking at key clinical areas of uncertainty and debate. The OTS membership rapidly expanded as we realised the importance of both the Major trauma centres in improving the mortality (20-40% improvement) and morbidity of our most seriously injured patients but also the importance of our trauma units which still deal with the majority of isolated peripheral limb injuries.

The OTS successfully engaged with the BOA and BOTA to deliver revalidation and training sessions and seminars at the key meetings over the calendar year. Our industry colleagues supported the annual meeting and over the past year we have re-developed and updated the website (https://orthopaedictrauma.org.uk/) to provide what we hope will be a useful and constantly evolving education resource. Links to already available resources along with educational webinars will be the focus of the website development over the next weeks and months.
The re-launch of the website on 5th December 2024 corresponded  with OTS joining LinkedIn and our followers have expanded from 30 to over 1000 in the past 10 months. The challenge of fragility fractures in our increasingly frail and older person population has been emphasied in recent revalidation sessions and we are working closely with the UK and global Fragility Fracture Network (https://fragilityfracturenetwork.org/).
The 2026 OTS meeting will be in London this year with a likely emphasis on AI technology; evidence base for bone augmentation; pelvic fracture update (from our OTS affiliated BAPAS group (British Association of Pelvic and Acetabular Surgeons) as well as taking in feedback to keep the meeting interactive and current with a range of national and some international speakers. We are an expanding membership and the executive committee are keen to develop input into the key pillars of education, research, policy and effective communication – please contact us directly to get involved in any of these subcommittees.
Over the next 2 months the OTS will : engaged with the British Trauma Society meeting in Edinburgh where the more generic aspects of orthopaedic trauma management, epidemiology and policy will be debated; represent the UK in the international forum at both the IOTA and OTA meetings in Mexico and Arizona as well as representing BOA trauma at the Chinese Orthopaedic Association annual congress near Beijing.
Best wishes and as we move into Q4 2025 will keep posting and e-mailing updates and areas of interest.
Andrew Gray – OTS Comms, President Elec.
